http://www.gazetteonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080822/NEWS/27671404/-1/rss01&rssfeed=rss01 At long last, boat ramps into the Cedar River inside the city limits are open.Fire Chief Steve Havlik has been reluctant to open the ramps because of debris and fecal contamination in the river as a result of June's flood. However, some users of the river and some on the City Council have been pushing to get the ramps open. In the process, the council learned that the river itself is under the control of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and had never been closed. The whole matter led to a discussion by the council about whether it or the city manager and fire chief had the say over the boat ramps. The council agreed that it was not its call. This week a company hired by the city cleaned debris from the river and used sonar to try to identify items hidden in the river. A floating marker is identifying one piece of submerged debris, and a partially submerged boathouse remains in the river, the city reported Thursday.Contamination levels in the river above downtown are now at normal levels for the river, Havlik reported this week.
