HP Sold Me A $1400 Craptop!

- posted: 22.08.08
http://ask.metafilter.com/56867/HP-Sold-Me-A-1400-Craptop My HP laptop (DV8000) crapped out on me with just over one month left on the 1 year manufacturer warranty. They've had the computer for almost a month now and are giving me the run around, even trying to sell me a brand new computer. What can I do? About a month and a half ago the internal power supply and screen went out on my laptop, I'd had it for only 10 months. When I called HP they took my information, sent me a box to send my notebook back to them for repairs, and promised an e-mail letting me know what the problem was and when it was going to be sent back to me. I was never contacted. After 2 weeks I finally got a hold of somebody who told me that they received my computer but it was completely water damaged (and therefore not covered)! I'm fairly positive that isn't true. I take good care of it and haven't had any spills on it. When I asked further questions I was told he didn't know anything. I asked to speak to a manager but none have been available any of the several times I've called. I've been told several times that I would be contacted within 24-48 business hours. I've now called and gotten this same response 4 times.
I called again this morning and was greeted with yet a different response. After being transfered for the 3rd time (and almost an hour spent on the phone) the man I spoke with tried to sell me a new computer. Here was his shtick, "as a valued customer you are entitled to receive a new computer for the low low price of $700 in lieu of having your computer repaired, I think we have your credit card on file, do you ok the purchase?". He continued to say that it would be almost $700 just to fix the computer, because the warranty that I have doesn't cover accidental spills, which again I'm certain never happened.
Do I have any legal recourse against HP? Can I force them to fix and return my laptop? Has anyone else had this sort of problem with them before? Help!!!

Biodiesel warranty

http://ask.metafilter.com/57571/Biodiesel-warranty Are there commercial diesel engines being manufactured and sold that will not lose their warranty if run on biodiesel? I just read this article http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/freeheadlines/LAC/20070223/SUZUKI23/national/National about David Suzuki (Canada's environmental alarmist in chief) who was recently traveling around in a diesel fueled bus because "But using the more environmentally friendly fuel would void the engine's warranty" (from the article).

I'm curious as to whether it is possible to buy a new diesel powered bus (or engine for another purpose) that will not have its warranty voided by using biodiesel. Any ideas folks?

does apple's warranty cover this?

http://ask.metafilter.com/58946/does-apples-warranty-cover-this does apple's 1-year warranty cover damage caused by static electricity? i got a strong shock from my ibook when pressing the space bar to wake up my computer from sleep. the shock caused the computer to turn off; when i restarted it all my files were intact but the computer no longer recognizes my battery and there is something wrong with the keyboard--i have to type very slowly (about one key per second) or else i'll start "losing" letters (it's not a delay--it just skips the ones that are input too quickly). so far nothing else seems to be amiss.

anyway, i'm taking my notebook into the applestore tomorrow for a diagnosis, but am sort of hoping to get some advance warning on what to expect, costwise. the apple website is, perhaps intentionally, a little unclear about its warranty terms.

Where can I find a good Xbox 360 backup warranty to supplement Microsoft's?

http://ask.metafilter.com/61113/Where-can-I-find-a-good-Xbox-360-backup-warranty-to-supplement-Microsofts I'm about to buy an Xbox 360. Where can I get a good supplementary replacement or service plan? I've known people who've had their Xbox 360's since launch day and haven't had a single problem or hiccup. But then again, there's all these complaints online about consoles bricking! I'd like to protect myself against any possible hiccups.

When Microsoft's warranty ends for me, or should they decide to screw me over (although lets hope not), where's a good replacement or service plan? Preferably a good one that will fix or replace quickly, instead of spending months over the phone trying to convince me that there's nothing wrong with my console.

I need to buy a good custom-built PC

http://ask.metafilter.com/67902/I-need-to-buy-a-good-custombuilt-PC I need to buy a good custom-built PC I need a nice new PC for gaming and software development. (So it needs to be a rather beefy machine) I'd like to be able to have the PC built to order (I don't need a huge amount of customization, but I need to be able to specify all of the things I want), and it's important that it have very good on-site warranty service if it breaks down (I hate fixing that kind of thing myself). I had a local company that I really liked with great service, but it went out of business. I've had bad experiences with Dell's lousy repair service and cut-rate parts, so I'm nervous about picking a company that can build me a good machine, and maintain it if need be. Can anyone give me some recommendations?

I Fought With The Law?

- posted: 22.08.08
http://ask.metafilter.com/69194/I-Fought-With-The-Law Is California Small Claims Court an appropriate venue to force a computer manufacturer to honor a refund? I bought a laptop from a well-known computer company. 1st laptop breaks and they try fixing it before replacing it. 2nd laptop breaks and they try fixing it before replacing it. 3rd laptop arrives and breaks. I call the computer company, ask for a refund, they deny it citing that refunds are at their discretion. Escalation to higher-ups in the company result in the same 'discretion' answer.

So, with this in mind can I take the company to California Small Claims Court and demand my money back? I've read the CSCC's documents on what's appropriate for the court, but I'm still unsure and don't want to waste taxpayer money and court time by accident.

You ever do a google search for "iMac fan"? Yeah. Pointless.

http://ask.metafilter.com/69347/You-ever-do-a-google-search-for-iMac-fan-Yeah-Pointless So I just got the newest iMac today (the one that was announced last week). After 4 hours or so of use the fan has kicked on in a most noisy way and it won't shut down. Restarting does nothing. Take time to let it cool. Restart. Just more fan. So...anyone got a "here-n-now" fix or do I take it back to the store in the morning?

Is Iphone insurance worth it?

- posted: 22.08.08
http://ask.metafilter.com/71254/Is-Iphone-insurance-worth-it Are there are good Iphone insurance policies or discreet cases that would protect from drops? I decided to get an iphone after my current phone stopped working due to rain. It was a Audiovox Smt 5600 and it was a great phone and I'm surprised it worked as long as it did. It managed to survive many drops but I'm nervous the iphone might not be so resilient... So I was wondering if anyone could suggest some sort of insurance for the iphone. I found one from SquareTrade that seemed like a pretty good deal at first. It is only 10% of the purchase price to extend the warranty 3 years. However it is an additional 50 dollars for the Accidental Damage Protection and then another 50 dollars deductible if you have to use it. Do you think that would be worth it? Has anyone dealt with this company? Also, can anyone suggest a protective skin that might save it from a drop? Thanks!

Car warranty rights?

- posted: 22.08.08
http://ask.metafilter.com/72718/Car-warranty-rights Car warranty rights? I have a Jeep Liberty that's about 150 miles or 3 months away from the warranty expiring. Just recently the check engine light went on. I took it to the dealer and they told me that its a serious engine problem and their "engine guy" cant look at it for a week. They also asked me for its service records, but I really dont have any. This thing has had its oil changed every 3k miles at different oil places. They told me that Chrysler Corporate may need these records if the engine needs replacing. Are they trying to screw me out of warranty repair? How does this process work? I imagine I can get most of the records by going back to the oil places and asking if they still have them. If I am missing some will they use some form of legalese to get out of repairing this car? Will I need a lawyer if it comes down to this? What else can I do? I could really used some advice on this. Ive never owned a new car before and so far dealing this this dealer has not been a positive experience.

Also, Ive had a lot of trouble with this dealer. i practically had to yell at them to fix a body part moulding that fell off. They kept citing non-existant body damage and the fact that I put glue on it as reasons why they shouldnt honor the repair. After being very firm with them did they agree to fix this. I consider them very hostile and am worried that they just are looking for ways not to honor the warranty.

Would the MacBook still be coverred?

- posted: 22.08.08
http://ask.metafilter.com/74104/Would-the-MacBook-still-be-coverred If I buy an Apple laptop in the US, will my warranty still be valid in Canada? The Canadian dollar is doing well, but no one up here seems to have adjusted their prices to reflect this. As such, the price for a MacBook Pro in the US is anywhere from $200-$400 cheaper than it is up here in Canada.

It's to the point where even crossing the border with it, declaring the purchase and paying the taxes, I come out ahead.

However, my question is this: Can I buy the MacBook Pro in the US, bring it to Canada, and still have a valid warranty? Does this apply to the Apple protection plan as well?
