Chrysler considering four-day work week for Toledo Jeep plant

Chrysler’s latest experiment is a four-day work week, which could be coming to the automaker’s Toledo Jeep plant in the near future. The idea is pretty simple: condense the work week down from five, eight hour days to four, ten hour days. Although the work week remains at 40 hours, Chrysler says the extra day off will actually save the company in energy costs. Jeep’s 3,800 employees will likely embrace the idea as it will give them a built in three-day weekend – Friday through Sunday. According to ABC, no date has been set for the switchover, but Chrysler is in talks with the UAW and suppliers about the possible shortened week.

Ford’s new efficient engines mean F-100 project shelved, no more Ranger imports

This likely means the long-rumored F-100 and a Ranger replacement will not see the light of day. The EcoBoost-badged engines will not only use turbo-charging and direct injection technologies to attain low consumption, but Ford’s head of advanced powertrain research, Dan Knapp, also hinted the automaker is considering an ethanol boosting technology in a Detroit News report. After the 3.5-liter, twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 debuts in the 2010 Lincoln MKS sedan next year, it will move in under the hoods of other models, including the F-150 pickup in about 1.5 years, Ford execs said on Wednesday. The F-100 would have been built at Ford’s Michigan Truck Plant in Wayne, but it is being retooled for small car production. “We have no intention of giving up our leadership in trucks,” said Ford’s global product development chief, Derrick Kuzak. “Fuel economy (will be) a reason to buy — no longer a reason to reject — Ford vehicles.” Not only will Ford make its engine assembly plants more flexible to suit demand between four-cylinder and V6 or V8 engines, but the automaker also confirmed it is in discussions with General Motors on potential collaborations on powertrain development.

Switzerland’s Green party proposes anti-car legislation

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/auto-news-blogs/~3/358805474/switzerland-s-green-party-proposes-anti-car-legislation Switzerland’s Green party proposes anti-car legislation Switzerland has never been the friendliest place on earth for cars, but new legislation could make it the downright meanest place for anything four-wheeled. Switzerland’s Green party has proposed a new regulation that would essentially ban all sports cars and SUVs. Under the proposed law, any vehicle weighing over 4,820 pounds would be banned from use within the Swiss border. The proposal would also do away with any vehicle that emits more than 250 g/km of CO2, as well as any diesel vehicle that doesn’t have an onboard particle filter. In the name of pedestrian safety, the plan would also ban any vehicles with front fascias deemed “dangerous to pedestrians,” according to Asphalte. If the law is enacted, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Maseratis, M BMWs, AMG Mercedes and S/RS Audis would suddenly become illegal in Switzerland. The only SUV likely to survive the new regulations would be the Lexus RX400h. Porsche would fair slightly better, but only the base model Boxster and Cayman would be allowed across the Swiss border. However, all hope is not lost for the people of Switzerland. A vote on the subject is probably still a few years out and 90 percent of the initiatives put before the Swiss people have been shot down since 1848.

There are various causes of traffic accidents and according to studies the lack of attention when driving accounts for the largest number of road accidents. Volvo in its continuous commitment to safety is investing in Seeing Machines which is a technology developed by an Australian company that detects and at the same warns vehicle drivers in the event of tiredness.

Seeing Machines same name as the technology it represents is a company formed as a result of a number of research projects at the Australian National University between 1997 and 2000. The company specializes in computerized technology that tracks head and eye movements as well as facial expressions. The technology is applicable for products that are within the areas of vehicle safety, medical diagnosing, simulation, marketing and games.

Seeing Machines’ offers a small camera that automatically detects signs of driver tiredness and distraction. There is also a specific calculation program that processes the information from images and then measures the position of the head rotation, eye movements and even eyelid behavior. The level of tiredness that a driver is experiencing is measured by the number of times that his/her eyes open and close. All the results are registered directly. Similarly, distraction and work load is measured through head and eye movements.

Volvo Cars' nose team - the human nose is still out of competition

A good car looks great, does great and now, Volvo Cars adds a new great category. A great car must also smell great. Few years ago, Volvo cars created a ‘smell test panel’. Also known as Volvo’s ‘nose team’, this squad is composed of eight people blessed with ‘standard’ noses. I wonder how their noses look like to be standard. Now what does this nose team do? These special people guide Volvo designers when choosing materials and production strategies when creating a car, especially its interior. They create the Volvo smell.

What smells good or bad is a subjective judgement. "Different people have different perceptions of smells," says Patrik Libander who is a test engineer and responsible for the smell test panel. "These are due to differences between generations and cultures, and to the different associations made by different people depending on their own experience. However, this is one of the things that make my job exciting."

A car’s interior is made of different materials like plastic and leather. These materials are made of substances which the material cannot all lock in itself so some evaporates giving the interior its brand new smell. However, Volvo’s nose team works to make each car smell like what it is expected. All members of the team were tested and were ensured to have the standard sense of smell so they could do their work properly. Four members of the nose team is present in every car smell test.

"People who like an odour that others in the panel think is unpleasant are excluded," explains Patrik Libander, "likewise those who either cannot detect or are hypersensitive to smells. All must be non-smokers, since smoking can affect the sense of smell."

"We impose strict demands both on ourselves and our suppliers," concludes Patrik Libander and adds "Travelling in a car should be a pleasant experience for the nose as well."
