BMW reaffirmed on Friday it is investing $750 million to expand production capacity in its U.S. plant in Spartanburg, S.C., where it will eventually assemble its X3, X5 and X6 range of sports utility vehicles. By 2012, the plant will be able to build 240,000 units as opposed to the current 160,000. The depreciation in the dollar has forced more carmakers to consider local dollar-zone production. Domestic rival Volkswagen is expected to decide in the coming weeks where to build a new assembly plant in order to naturally hedge its exposure to the dollar.

The Tiguan HyMotion features a hydrogen fuel cell system, which provides over 107 horsepower and produces zero tailpipe emissions (clean water vapor is its only bi-product). The innovative new Tiguan builds upon Volkswagen�??s ongoing development of the fuel cell as previously demonstrated with the Touran HyMotion. Volkswagen has long been committed to fuel efficient, environmentally responsible vehicles and this is evident with the new Tiguan utility vehicle and the Jetta TDI, offered in both sedan and SportWagen body styles. These vehicles provide efficiency, utility and performance in the refinement and interior appointment that is the hallmark of all Volkswagen vehicles. The well-refined four cylinder turbocharged engines �?? the Jetta utilizing Volkswagen�??s TDI technology and the Tiguan the fuel efficient TSI �?? provide ample horsepower and prodigious torque to make these vehicles sporty, efficient and fun to drive. Tiguan HyMotion The Tiguan HyMotion concept features a fuel cell system integrated in the engine compartment capable of 107 horsepower. With an assist from the electric motor, the Tiguan HyMotion advances to 134 horsepower. The top speed of the Tiguan HyMotion is 93 mph and it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in about 14 seconds. A lithium ion battery with a charge capacity of 6.8 Ampere-hours (Ah) serves as an auxiliary energy storage device with a maximum power output of 22 kW. The battery is charged by recovered braking energy (recuperation) or by the fuel cell. This increased functionality and efficiency does not impair the interior space of the vehicle. The battery system is installed in the trunk beneath the dual cargo floor available on the production Tiguan. The 700 bar hydrogen tank was integrated in the area beneath the floor in the rear bench seat and cargo area. It can hold up to 3.2 kilograms of hydrogen (H2). Basic operation of fuel cells The key component of each individual fuel cell �?? a number of them are combined into a stack �?? is a proton-conducting membrane. It is located between each anode and cathode pair. Hydrogen flows on the anode side, and air flows into the cell on the cathode side. When many of these cells are combined in a stack, enough energy can be generated to drive a vehicle. In each cell, hydrogen and oxygen react to form water on the cathode side. The fuel cell thereby converts chemical energy directly into electrical energy in an oxidation, or �??cold�?� combustion process. The generated �??exhaust�?� is clean water vapor. The fuel cell is supplied fuel from the hydrogen tank and oxygen from the air by an external air inlet and outputs the electrical energy it generates �?? the power �?? via a converter and a downstream electrical system rectifier �?? to one or more electric motors. The Tiguan HyMotion is nearly silent when driven, and it is emissions-free. Current Fuel Efficient Vehicles Fuel efficiency, performance and convenience all come standard with the 2009 Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen. The eagerly anticipated, 50-state compliant clean diesel TDI�??s come to the United States in August 2008. The Jetta TDI will have an immediate impact on fuel savings in a big way �?? up to 35 percent savings compared to a similar gasoline engines. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates the Jetta TDI at an economical 29 mpg City and 40 mpg Highway. Volkswagen engineers have been able to reduce NOx emissions by 90 percent on the TDI engine, through internal engine modifications and new catalytic converter technologies. This advance in diesel technology allows the Jetta TDI to exceed the toughest emissions requirements, including the �??LEV2�?� standard, which limits NOx emissions to 70 mg per mile. The new Tiguan comes standard with a 2.0L TSI engine delivering turbocharged acceleration while maintaining responsible fuel efficiency of 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. This award winning turbocharged four-cylinder power plant delivers 200 horsepower and 207 lbs �??ft of torque. The combination of four valves per cylinder, direct fuel injection and turbo charging delivers the optimum balance of power and economy. Adding to increased efficiency is a choice of either six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission options.

For the entry price of $40,950, you get a sporty crossover equipped with rear-wheel drive and a 303 horsepower 3.5L V6. For an additional $1,400, you can send power to all for wheels. FX35 buyers can also choose from a Technology Package ($2,900), Mobile Entertainment System ($1,600), Premium Package ($2,350), Navigation Package ($2,850), and Touring Package ($2,650). The range-topping FX50 adds a 390 horsepower 5.0L, a seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive — all for $56,700. The FX50 comes loaded to the gills from the factory, so options are fairly limited. However, FX50 buyers will still have a few option boxes to check, including the $3,000 Sport Package and a no-cost 21-inch wheel and tire package. The new FX goes on sale beginning June 24.

The new system now allows the vehicle — dubbed the FCHV-adv — to travel 516 miles on a single tank of hydrogen and it can operate in conditions as cold as -22 degrees F. Through changes to the vehicle's fuel-cell unit, braking system and a few other tweaks, Toyota engineers were able to improve the fuel-cell's fuel efficiency by 25 percent, according to Automotive News. Those changes combined with a bigger fuel tank and the doubling of storage pressure netted a new range of 516 miles — up from the previous FCHV's (pictured) range of 205 miles. Top speed is a respectable 97 mph. In comparison, Honda's FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell sedan has a range of 385 miles and can operate in conditions from -22 degrees F to 203 degrees F. The Honda tops out at 99 mph. The new FCHV-adv is slated to be leased to government agencies in Japan starting later this year.

According to a new report, General Motors has approached both Tata Motors and its cross-town rival — Mahindra & Mahindra — about the possible acquisition of its Hummer brand. India's Economic Times is reporting that GM's representatives have approach both companies about the possible acquisition of the iconic, but now out of fashion, off-road brand. GM announced that it was considering the sale of its Hummer brand earlier this week at its annual meeting. In the face of $4 a gallon gasoline, Hummer sales are down 36 percent this year — including a 60 percent drop-off in sales last month. GM failed to confirm the report, but told Automotive News that its review of what to do with the brand "is just getting under way." Although no U.S. or Japanese automaker would want to add the gas-guzzling poster child to their portfolios, Tata and Mahindra & Mahindra still heavily rely on trucks and SUVs. As you know by now, Tata is the proud new owner of Land Rover and Mahindra plans to sell a compact pickup in the U.S. by next year.

Toyota sold 51,291 Camrys last month while Tundra sales slipped 31.5 percent. The future of the Indiana plant — which produces the Toyota Tundra pickup, Sequoia SUV and Sienna minivan — has been up in the air for several months now. Earlier reports suggest that Toyota would move Tundra production exclusively to its new plant in San Antonio, Texas, with the latest reports indicating Toyota would export vehicles made at its Indiana plant. The move to produce Camrys at its truck plant would seem to be a smart one for Toyota. Not only would it allowed Toyota to maximize its production capacity, but it would give the Japanese automaker a third U.S. Camry plant at a time when demand for fuel-efficient vehicles is on the rise. We're pretty sure workers at the Princeton, Indiana plant would also be in favor of Camry production rather than a pink slip. Toyota has yet to officially confirm the report, but did tell Automotive News that it is "looking at a lot of things to balance production."
