Safe Kids Program Hits Remarkable Milestone By Anthony Fontanelle
- posted: 15.07.08http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/auto-news-blogs/~3/335413319/safe-kids-program-hits-remarkable-milestone-by-anthony-fontanelle It was reported by the Auto Channel today that Safe Kids Buckle Up, the child passenger safety program of Safe Kids USA sponsored by General Motors and Chevrolet, has arrived at a most significant landmark that no one has ever did: the Safe Kids Program had its one million child safety seats ensured for correct installation."A Safe Kids child seat inspection provides hands-on training for parents and caregivers. At about 30 minutes per inspection, the milestone we are celebrating today represents more than 500,000 volunteer hours -- or 57 years of one person working around the clock. Our thousands of volunteers are the backbone of Safe Kids Buckle Up and they work tirelessly to help make sure the children who come to a checkup event are safer when they leave than when they arrived," says Mitch Stoller, president and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide. Today, the one millionth seat will be tested out along with some safety car parts at an event at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. The occasion is open to everyone and 150 kids from the Los Angeles Urban League Head Start and State Preschool are listed to have their seats examined. Furthermore, almost 200 additional car seat checkup programs are being apprehended during the weekend at Chevrolet and other GM dealerships and at district locations across the U.S. territory in celebration of the millionth seat milestone."Keeping all children safer in vehicles is one of our top priorities," said Nicole R. Nason, administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. "Programs like Safe Kids Buckle Up have helped to change the culture of car seat safety in the United States and have been essential in protecting our most precious passengers."Major development to this safety features and other car parts have been completed since 1997 when the program tested its first car seat. Figures from NHTSA revealed a 25 percent plunge in vehicle crash deaths for children under the age of 5 from 1997 to 2006."Safe Kids USA and General Motors have been leaders in child occupant protection. As we have said before, the Safe Kids Buckle Up program has given families across the country the peace of mind that comes with knowing how to properly secure their children in a vehicle. Checking a million seats through the Safe Kids Buckle Up program has likely resulted in hundreds of lives being saved because of the proper use of car seats and booster seats," says Mark V. Rosenker, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board.
BMW 3-Series Facelift - Official Pictures
- posted: 15.07.08http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/auto-news-blogs/~3/335418629/bmw-3-series-facelift-official-pictures Just a week after the presentation of the all-new 7-Series, BMW has now taken the wraps off the facelifted 3-Series sedan and touring models that are due to make their first public appearance at the Paris motor show in October with sales following shortly after. The most significant changes in the 2009 3-Series concern the fresh front and rear styling, partially inspired from the new 7-Series. In particular, the 2009 3-Series’ reworked front end is more dramatic thanks to the sculpted hood, the new heavily profiled bumper, the revised headlights and the new grille that lost the chrome “eyebrows”. At the rear, BMW’s design team (finally) added a new set of tail-lights reminiscent of those found in the new 7-Series along with a newly shaped trunk lid and bumper. The exterior mirrors are also new. Inside, minor tweaks include the new trim combos, a revised armrest and an updated version of BMW’s iDrive controller along with a new, high-resolution 8.8-inch color monitor. There are no changes under the hood as the 3-Series retains the same engines as before.
Consider Your Children With Car Insurance
- posted: 11.07.08http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/auto-news-blogs/~3/332069429/consider-your-children-with-car-insurance School is out and that means parents will be making lengthy car journeys with their children to satisfy their desire for the great outdoors. However, without the right car insurance policy in place even the most devoted parent could be caught out if an accident occurs.According to research from Direct Line car insurance, a quarter of parents with children aged between three and 12 are not using car seats at all. This is despite the fact that seatbelt laws require children to use car seats until they are 135cm in height or 12 years old.Worryingly, even those that do use car seats are unaware of how this equipment can be affected in an accident. More than 20 per cent of those surveyed believe replacing a car seat is unnecessary after a low speed collision. The car insurance provider warns that even if there are no obvious signs of damage a car seat can have its structural integrity undermined. Around 30 children aged 11 or under are killed while travelling in a car every year with around 400 seriously injured - many of these accidents can be avoided with proper use of a car seat.Thankfully you can avoid the expense of paying for a new car seat with the right car insurance policy. Many insurers automatically provide a replacement even if there is no obvious indication of damage. It is important to check your provider will supply a new for old replacement so you don't receive a model with similar wear and tear. Also examine the excess of your policy closely - this is the amount you agree to pay when making a claim.A high voluntary excess may earn you cheap car insurance - however, don't set it so high that it negates your car insurance claim or causes you debt should an accident occur.
Points Equal Financial Penalties, Not Prizes
- posted: 11.07.08http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/auto-news-blogs/~3/332069428/points-equal-financial-penalties-not-prizes You may think you know the penalties for breaking the rules when behind the wheel - for example three points on your licence and a 60 fine if you're caught speeding. However, research suggests that this is only the beginning of the price you'll have to pay.According to a price comparison website, drivers with penalty points on their licence will pay up to 60 per cent more for their car insurance - the equivalent of 370. Young drivers in particular are likely to be hit hard - a 21-year-old female from Manchester driving a 1.3 litre Ford Fiesta would suffer a 92 per cent increase in her premium with six points on her licence. That's an increase of 895. If the same driver amassed nine penalty points, she could expect to pay around 210 per cent more, or 2,048.It's not just a problem for young drivers however - a 55-year-old man living in Bristol with a 3.0 litre BMW MX5 could expect to see a 49 per cent increase with six points on his licence. So the lesson seems obvious - avoid driving convictions. However, the steep financial penalties do not seem to be acting as a deterrent as around 3.2million driving convictions were recorded by the comparison website in the last 12 months.Drivers are urged to take more care when driving and think about the consequences of their actions. Jumping a red light, or driving a little over the limit may save minutes - but it can have long term repercussions at a time when finances are already tight. If you have committed a driving offence don't panic - some car insurance companies are lenient, particularly if it's your first offence. The key is to shop around for cheap car insurance with a comparison website and ensure you're getting a competitive quote.

2011 BMW X3 [Illustrated]
- posted: 11.07.08http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/auto-news-blogs/~3/332106362/2011-bmw-x3-illustrated 2011 BMW X3 [Illustrated] Spies just recently spotted the next-generation X3 for the first time, but heavy camouflage covered what the production model will actually look like. To combat this problem, we had our artists create an illustration of what the road-going version will look like. The new X3’s dimensions will hardly change compared with the current one, and its styling will be shaped to reflect elements from the CS Concept, as seen in our illustration. The basic shape will remain much the same, however the new model is expected to feature a more prominent grille plus new wraparound headlights. Designers will also focus on improving the quality of the interior, as the new X3 will be facing stiff competition from the recently unveiled new Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLK. Production of the X3 will be moved to BMW’s Spartanburg plant, where it will be built alongside the new X6 and X5. Expect to see the twin-turbo 3.0-liter from the 335i make its way into the X3 range, as well as the powerful but frugal new 204-hp 2.0-liter turbodiesel. A new hybrid model is also tipped to be on the table. However, the current X3 will have to soldier on for a few more years until the arrival of this all-new model comes for the 2011 model year. Chrysler says bankruptcy rumors are “without merit”
- posted: 11.07.08http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/auto-news-blogs/~3/332106361/chrysler-says-bankruptcy-rumors-are-without-merit Chrysler says bankruptcy rumors are “without merit” Although Chrysler’s U.S. sales continue to sag below the overall industry, the Michigan-based automaker is still adamantly denying any bankruptcy rumors. Chrysler’s sales were down over 30 percent in June, largely due to a lineup heavy in trucks and SUVs. In a letter to dealers obtained by Automotive News, Chrysler reassured its dealers that liquidity was not a problem. “Speculation has surfaced recently in media coverage of analyst reports suggesting Chrysler might have liquidity issues down the road if the U.S. market does not pick up,” the letter, which was signed by Chrysler co-president Jim Press, said. “Chrysler has communicated to the media that the suggestion of a possible bankruptcy situation is without merit.” Some industry analysts have predicted that the nation’s third largest automaker could file for bankruptcy as soon as September. Adding to liquidity concerns is the fact that Chrysler just drew down a $2 billion line of credit from Cerberus and Daimler. However, Chrysler claims that line of credit stems from the original deal inked between the companies last year and has nothing to do with current market conditions.

Mitsubishi confirms production of Concept-cX, reveals specs
- posted: 11.07.08http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/auto-news-blogs/~3/332106360/mitsubishi-confirms-production-of-concept-cx-reveals-specs Mitsubishi confirms production of Concept-cX, reveals specs Back at the New York Auto Show in March, Mitsubishi said it would bring its Concept-cX to production in North America. While we still don’t know when exactly it will make its debut here, new reports revealed information on the little SUV as it will appear overseas. U.K. magazine Autocar reports the vehicle will come standard with an all-wheel drive system when it goes on sale late in 2009 in the United Kingdom. Power will come from Euro 5 emissions compliant diesel engines, with a new 1.8 liter turbocharged four-cylinder chief among them. Good for 134 horsepower and 207lb-ft of torque, the powerplant will be mated to the same type of SST twin-clutch transmission as is offered in the Lancer Evolution X. “The Concept-cX will become a new sub-Outlander model,” a senior Mitsubishi source told Autocar. Styling will remain similar to the concept car’s, with a split tailgate and aggressive front end likely retained. On the road to production, the cX badge will be replaced by something more in-line to the rest of the automaker’s offerings.
