Abarth low cost roadster

- posted: 22.07.08
http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/auto-news-blogs/~3/341883480/abarth-low-cost-roadster The market has been waiting for a signal for some time from Abarth, and now the brand’s re-birth has really taken off and hit an incredible speed. The biggest challenge will happen over the next couple of years, though, when a completely new project will be launched rather than an elaboration on an existing Fiat. We have already heard about a possible collaboration between Abarth and Lotus for a chassis and the use of the 1.4, 135 hp Tjet on the Abarth 500, but Worldcarfans provides further speculation. It has been suggested that we could see the heir to the Fiat X1/9, but also a possible alternative to the defunct Smart Roadster, all of which could see a price of less than 20,000 euros.

Porsche readying Cayman S Sport

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/auto-news-blogs/~3/341901108/porsche-readying-cayman-s-sport Porsche readying Cayman S Sport In order to spike demand for the last few examples of the current-generation Cayman sports car, Porsche is reportedly readying an S Sport edition of the Cayman. In addition to helping Porsche dealers move a few more Caymans before an updated version arrives in mid-2009, the Cayman S Sport will also commemorate Porsche’s 60th anniversary. Like the S Sport Edition of the Porsche Boxster last year, the Cayman S Sport is expected to boast a sports chrono pack, upgraded brakes and suspension, as well as a two-toned paint scheme inspired by the GT3. A boost in power is also expected, but the improvements will be modest at best. Although Porsche has yet to announce pricing, CarTribe speculates that the limited-edition Cayman will list from about £47,000 in the UK. With the updated Cayman slated for a January reveal, expect the Cayman S Sport to bow sometime towards the end of the year.

The Dutch site claims that the cabrio version of the Cooper and Cooper S won't make an appearance until the Spring of 2009, but the jacked-up Crossman CUV could launch around the same time. The "Crossman" is slated to be produced by Magna Steyr, riding 80 mm higher than standard MINIs and will be powered by the same 1.6-liter naturally aspirated and turbocharged mills found in the Cooper and Clubman, and their S-badged counterparts. Magna says that it will be producing 80,000 Crossmans (Crossmen?) each year on an entirely new platform that allows the use of both AWD and FWD drivetrains.[Source: AutoTelegraaf via Motor Authority] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ferrari releases more photos of the California, now with the top up!

This blue GT can be seen in the gallery below with the top up, down and halfway in between. Thankfully, in spite of the 2+ designation (whatever that means) the car still maintains two-seater proportions, so it doesn't have a ridiculously long rear deck. There has been plenty of discussion in the comments about the virtues of the California's design details, but the overall proportions are definitely classic GT the folding hard top manages not to screw that up.Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo recently had his first crack at driving the new car at the company's Fiorano test track and unsurprisingly came away feeling quite effusive about the newcomer. In the bosses words, "The California is, like all of our models, the epitome of cutting-edge innovation." The new hard top can apparently change state in a mere 14 seconds. Hopefully it will also prove to be more reliable than some other such examples. It's going to be a long summer of teasing from Ferrari before the California makes its debut at the Paris Motor Show in October. In the meantime, Ferrari's latest press release is after the jump.Gallery: 2009 Ferrari California[Source: Ferrari]Continue reading Ferrari releases more photos of the California, now with the top up! Permalink | Email this | Comments

BMW to show X1 and MINI CUV in Paris

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/02/bmw-to-show-x1-and-mini-cuv-in-paris/ Filed under: Concept Cars, Paris Motor Show, Crossovers/CUVs, BMW, MINIWith last week's news that BMW will begin producing the new X1 at its Leipzig facility, it was just a matter of time before the Bavarian boys gave us an indication as to when its compact CUV would be unveiled. As suspected, the wraps will be pulled off an X1 concept at the Paris Motor Show this September, but as is often the case with BMW, the "concept" is almost exactly what we'll see when it goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2009. The new model will be built off the 1-series platform (a shortened 3-series) and according to an unnamed source quoted by Automotive News, "will use the two highest spec gasoline and the two highest spec diesel engines from the 1-series." The source also confirmed earlier reports that the MINI SUV/CUV will debut in Paris with power provided by the Cooper S' turbocharged 1.4-liter or the Cooper D's oilburner. Sales of the MINI 'ute will begin in the second quarter of 2010.[Source: Automotive News - Sub. Req.] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paris Preview: Audi to unveil supercharged S4

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/03/paris-preview-audi-to-unveil-supercharged-s4/ Filed under: Sedans/Saloons, Paris Motor Show, AudiWe knew that the new Audi S4 was due to be unveiled within the next six months, but CAR was able to confirm that the supercharged sled will make an official appearance at the Paris Motor Show this September. As previously reported, the new S4 will ditch its 4.2-liter V8 in favor of a new supercharged 3.0-liter V6 producing around 350 hp - a few ponies more than the current S4's output.CAR got the details about the new S4 while running the twin-clutch-equipped S5 through its paces, and is able to confirm that the S-badged sedan will benefit from the same seven-speed gearbox, with shifts taking place in 200 ms. Naturally, the S4 will be equipped with quattro all-wheel-drive, and sales will begin in the UK in early 2009, with wagon and convertible variants following thereafter. As for the future of the RS4, Audi isn't confirming any specs yet, but they're confident that when the new M3-fighter hits the streets in 2010, the new S-tronic dual-clutch gearbox's shifts will be reduced to around 140-150 ms.[Source: CAR] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Return of Lancia Fulvia gets green light again

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/06/return-of-lancia-fulvia-gets-green-light-again/ Filed under: Concept Cars, Time Warp, Coupes, Euro, Paris Motor Show, Alfa Romeo, FIATThe 2003 Lancia Fulvia Coupe concept that tantalized showgoers at the Frankfurt Motor Show with its crisp lines that strongly evoked its namesake predecessor was presumed dead after Fiat canned the idea due to financial woes and want of a modern platform. It seems that plans for a new coupe carrying the Lancia badge is resurgent inside Fiat, though the clearly retro styling of the 2003 concept will likely fall by the wayside instead of getting mired in a retro rut. It's rumored that we'll see a Fulvia riding atop the MiTo's chassis at this year's Paris Motor Show. Rather than relying on the work of 40 years past, the new Fulvia will share nothing but a name with its predecessor. The car may follow the current trend of other Euro coupes and incorporate a folding hardtop, but there are conflicting reports that it may also be a conventional fixed-head-coupe. We certainly wouldn't complain about giving the MiTo an appropriate coupe roofline, so please send some our way. Spy Shots: Ford Ka caught

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/10/spy-shots-ford-ka-caught/ Filed under: Spy Photos, Economy, Euro, Paris Motor Show, Hatchbacks, Ford, UKThe newest Ford Ka has been spotted by Auto Express, and the car in the flesh looks almost exactly like the Ka renderings that Auto Express published a couple of weeks ago. The grille could be a bit smaller than the one in the rendering, but it's difficult to tell without the highlights and chrome. The number of discrete elements in the GT-R-like mouthpiece, though, is the same. Otherwise, the side swage line looks to be toned down a bit; and in the rendering, the Ford badge on the hatch that doubles as the latch has been replaced by a separate latch and key. Inside, Ford has said the car will outdo the car with which it shares underpinnings, the Fiat 500, and maintain the handling that has made it a European favorite for 12 years. All of which makes this a hot little Ka. Stay tuned for the Paris Motor Show when we see the real deal in person.[Source: Auto Express] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Spy Shot: Audi A5 Cabrio gets snapped

- posted: 20.07.08
http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/10/audi-a5-cabrio-gets-snapped/ Filed under: Spy Photos, Convertibles, Paris Motor Show, AudiThe Audi A5 Cabrio won't be officially unveiled until the Paris Motor Show, but Auto Express has snapped an undisguised tester roaming the hills of Switzerland. The hot-looking A5 Cabrio is sporting a black canvas top, which for now puts to rest notions that a hard-top convertible is in the works. A cloth top makes abundant sense because it will be less complicated than a retractable hard top and also cutting down the on overall tonnage. The Cabrio's body appears to be unchanged in comparison to the A5 coupe, save for the chrome strip that separates the stowable top from the body. We're assuming powertrains will remain unchanged versus the A5 coupe, as is typically the case for Audi cabriolets. Rumors of an A5 drop top have been rampant since the minute the coupe was first announced, so it's nice to see that the gossip has been visually confirmed. Now all we have to wait for is the much-anticipated RS5. Thanks for the tip, rsfourever! [Source: Auto Express] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paris Pre-Preview: Mitsubishi to unveil production Lancer Sportback and Ralliart version

The Lancer Sportback is just what it sounds like, a five-door hatchback version of the recently redesigned Lancer model that's on sale around the world. Mitsubishi already revealed in its latest global business report that it would be selling the Lancer Sportback in the U.S. as well, but the only time frame given was sometime after the introduction of the Evo X, which is already on sale here. In Europe, the Lancer Sportback will be powered by a 1.5L or 1.8L four-cylinder, or a 2.0L turbodiesel, while the Sportback Ralliart will feature a turbocharged 2.0L MIVEC engine producing 237 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque that's mated to Mitsubishi's Twin-Clutch SST transmission. It will also feature an Active Center Differential to help send torque to the wheels that can use it, as well as two-piston front brake calipers. Sounds like the same setup we saw on the U.S. version of the Lancer Ralliart sedan that debuted at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show in January. We were particularly smitten with that car, so adding some more interior cubes and a fifth door should only serve to increase our anticipation for Paris.Gallery: Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback[Source: Mitsubishi]Continue reading Paris Pre-Preview: Mitsubishi to unveil production Lancer Sportback and Ralliart version Permalink | Email this | Comments
