Daimler to invest $420m in Indian venture
- posted: 22.03.08http://www.autoblog.com/2007/12/27/daimler-to-invest-420m-in-indian-venture/ Filed under: Trucks/Pickups, Plants/Manufacturing, Commercial Trucks, DaimlerChryslerDaimler is joining throngs of other automakers, including Navistar, Nissan and Volvo, to establish India as one of the largest builders of commercial trucks in the world. Its newest venture involves a partnership between Daimler AG and India's Hero Group (great name!), with Daimler investing some $420 million for a 60-percent stake in the India-based manufacturer. The venture will involve the creation of light-, medium- and heavy-duty trucks in one of the world's burgeoning production centers that's still got a lot left to build, and although company officials at both corps remained mum on details, expect things to be firmed up in the first quarter of 2008.[Source: Economic Times via Automotive News - Sub. Transporter full of VWs drives into San Diego Bay
- posted: 22.03.08http://www.autoblog.com/2007/12/31/transporter-full-of-vws-drives-into-san-diego-bay/ Filed under: Safety, Commercial Trucks, Volkswagen var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/autos/Transporter_full_of_VWs_drives_into_San_Diego_Bay'; Volkswagen doesn't make amphibious cars, but it may want to consider them in the future. On Saturday, a trucker hauling a load of new VWs from San Diego to Los Angeles drove off a pier and into the ocean. Local authorities say the driver apparently "suffered from some kind of medical emergency", causing him to black out and lose control of the truck. The cab careened into the San Diego Bay at a National City marine terminal, plunging into the water. The trailer stayed on the pier, but three cars fell into the bay. The teamster regained consciousness underwater, escaped from the tractor and swam some 13 feet to the surface where he was evacuated in reportedly good condition to a local hospital. Spy Shots: Citroen C-something could be Berlingo van replacement
- posted: 22.03.08http://www.autoblog.com/2007/12/31/spy-shot-citroen-c-something-could-be-berlingo-van-replacement/ Filed under: Spy Photos, Economy, Minivans/MPVs, Euro, Commercial Trucks, PSA, CitroenEarlier we brought you a screen shot of Citroen's website that features a countdown meter until the French automaker unveils its latest vehicle. Although we'll have to wait another couple of days to know for certain, the replacement for the Berlingo utility minivan is shaping up as a strong contender for the slot, with an undisguised photo of the new vehicle surfacing on the internet. The Berlingo, also badged as the Partner by PSA sister-company Peugeot, has been on the market since 1996 and received a facelift in 2002. Competing with the new Renault Kangoo that was unveiled at last September's Frankfurt show, the little vans are a common site overseas where their utility and compact size prove a popular combination. Mystery Revealed: new Citroen Berlingo
- posted: 22.03.08http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/02/mystery-revealed-new-citroen-berlingo/ Filed under: Economy, Minivans/MPVs, Euro, Commercial Trucks, PSA, Citroen We waited. We were patient. And this is what Santa's French cousin brought us: a tiny utility van. We were hoping the predictions were wrong and that with its "C-Reveal" new product page, Citroen might give us something a little more exciting, like maybe the C5 Cabrio. But instead we got the Berlingo. The new Berlingo is available either as a passenger vehicle (or Leisure Activity Vehicle, as Citroen imaginatively calls it) or as a slab-sided Light Commercial Vehicle. Citroen sold over 1.76 million examples of the outgoing Berlingo, which has been on the market since 1996 (with a facelift in 2002) and which will stay on in the meantime as the lower-priced Berlingo First. The new Berlingo uses running gear from the bigger, more civilized C4 Picasso minivan. It also grows in size over the old model and gets one of those new HDi particulate-filter diesels the French are so good at. If itty-bitty European vans are your thing, you can check out all the juicy details in the press release after the jump, and stay tuned for the Partner version of the Berlingo from PSA sister-company Peugeot. Peugeot gets new vans to Partner with Citroen Berlingo
- posted: 22.03.08http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/02/peugeot-gets-new-vans-to-partner-with-citroen-berlingo/ Filed under: Economy, Minivans/MPVs, Euro, Commercial Trucks, PSA, Peugeot Where there's smoke, there's fire. And while most wouldn't think of a miniscule European van as hot, PSA's Peugeot brand has its day in the sun with its new Partner vans, unveiled together with its sister-company Citroen's new Berlingo. The new Partner is virtually identical to its partner, the Berlingo, but is distinguished by some unique features and sheetmetal. The passenger version is labeled the Partner Tepee and gets a multi-function roof called "Zenith". It's also available with a pseudo-off-road package called the Partner Tepee Outdoor. The outgoing version, on the market since 1996, continues on as the entry-level Partner Origin (like the Berlingo First). And, of course, there's a utilitarian version set up for light commercial use with a 1.8-meter long cargo floor that can be extended to 3 meters by dropping the Multi-Flex passenger seats, which gives the Partner LCV an additional 400 liters (14 cubic feet) of cargo space on top of the 3,300-liter (116 cubic-foot) conventional capacity. BorgWarner to supply turbos for Ford's V8 diesels
- posted: 22.03.08http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/07/borgwarner-to-supply-turbos-for-fords-v8-diesels/ Filed under: Trucks/Pickups, Plants/Manufacturing, Tech, Commercial Trucks, FordUPDATE: According to Ford, BorgWarner has been supplying turbos to International for the F-series since this time last year. Automotive News apparently mistook an old press release for a new product announcement.BorgWarner has won the bid to begin supplying International Engine with a turbocharger setup that will help power Ford's F-series pickups. The new turbo system, which employs a two-stage snail and variable turbine geometry (VTG), will be slapped onto the 6.4-liter PowerStroke V8 diesel, and will increase the oilburner's output while simultaneously lowering emissions. This newest implementation of VTG proves what BorgWarner asserted back in March when it released a report saying that the new turbocharger setup will filter its way down to lesser models in the coming years.[Source: Automotive News - Sub. Spy Shots: International LoneStar Class 8 tractor
- posted: 22.03.08http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/12/spy-shots-mystery-big-rigs-from-international/ Filed under: Chicago Auto Show, Commercial TrucksClick image for 5 more shots of the LoneStarBig rigs are awesome. We freely admit that this isn't our area of expertise, but when something particularly cool and truck-related comes along, we're more than happy to share. Thanks to an Autoblog reader named Johnny, who sent in the photos you see here, something cool indeed came along. We don't know if the pair of rigs you see are concepts or a new production model that's set to debut sometime soon. The Mid-America Trucking Show -- the biggest show in the industry -- is coming up in March, so these might be headed there. Our submitter at first thought that they might just be show vehicles, but some details lead him to believe that this could be a new production model sporting a nifty new hood design. The thing that has our tipster thinking "production" is that different sleeper configs are shown. The silver rig's is taller and incorporates a large fairing, while the black one's is less pronounced. Aside from the swoopy front end, the layout seems conventional, with exposed fuel tanks and the like. The final clue that these may be upcoming production trucks is on the rear mud flap of the black rig, which has something like "LongStar" or "LoadStar" emblazoned on it. (It's LoneStar -- see update below.) Most of International's trucks have "Star" nomenclature, and the "Star" moniker on the pictured vehicle is not one currently in use. We'll have to wait and see what plays out in the coming weeks, but one thing's certain: these things are bitchin'.Thanks for the photos, Johnny!UPDATE: According to commenter FC, the trucks are examples of International's new Class 8 flagship tractor, the LoneStar, will will be officially premiered at the Chicago Auto Show next month. Sadly, we don't think one of these will fit in the Autoblog Garage. Thanks, FC!Gallery: International's mystery big rigs Permalink | Email this | Comments
Detroit 2008: Live intro of the 2009 Ford F-150
- posted: 22.03.08http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/13/detroit-2008-live-intro-of-the-2009-ford-f-150/ Filed under: Detroit Auto Show, Trucks/Pickups, Commercial Trucks, Fordclick above for high-res live shots of the 2009 Ford F-150We already brought you official photography of the newly-revamped 2009 Ford F-150 just after midnight today, but that's hardly enough attention for America's best-selling vehicle. Now that the Blue Oval boys have rolled out the new truck into Cobo Arena - with help from Toby Keith and a cast of characters - we see little reason to think that the F-series won't retain its crown. Improving the F-150 "truck-ness" are several features, such as the tailgate step that we appreciated so much on larger Super Duty, and new fold-down steps that can be accessed from the side of the truck. Considering how deep the box is on this truck, the steps will definitely come in handy on the ranch or at the grocery store. Ford's slick Integrated Trailer Brake Controller is now available on a half-ton truck for the first time, and Trailer Sway Control helps keep the vehicle on the road while towing so that hopefully you won't need to experience the effectiveness of Roll Stability Control and side-curtain airbags. Tow and payload ratings are as-yet announced; we expect to hear more by the Chicago Auto Show next month.More after the jump...Gallery: Detroit 2008: 2009 Ford F-150 - Live RevealContinue reading Detroit 2008: Live intro of the 2009 Ford F-150 Permalink | Email this | Comments
Chicago '08 Preview: Ford Transit Connect rumored to arrive
- posted: 22.03.08http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/23/chicago-08-preview-ford-transit-connect-rumored-to-arrive/ Filed under: Car Buying, Chicago Auto Show, Trucks/Pickups, Commercial Trucks, Fordclick above for more high-res images of the Ford Transit ConnectWe reported last January that the European Ford Transit Connect would be coming to the U.S., and now we've learned that the Euro van is expected to join the assemblage of debuts at this year's Chicago Auto Show. Speculation is that the front-wheel-drive mini-ish vans will hit showrooms as a 2009 model and come with a 4-cylinder engine. It is also said to have seating for five, but meant to compete with another, larger European transplant, the Dodge Sprinter. Since Ford hasn't even acknowledged that the vehicle will be at Chicago, it hasn't issued a price, but MSRP for the Sprinter Van is $32,150 and the Sprinter Wagon goes for $34,350. If nothing else, we're happy to see Ford's European migration this way continuing, and there's even a Transit Connect SportVan! Now if we could work on some of those passenger car offerings...[Source: The Car Connection]Gallery: Ford Transit ConnectGallery: Ford Transit Connect Sport Concept Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
